Generative AI is rapidly reshaping how software gets written. By analyzing millions of GitHub commits, Johannes and colleagues from Utrecht and Vienna find that AI coding tools are already widely used, but adoption varies by country and experience level. Almost one in three Python functions contributed by US-based developers are written by generative AI. Developers who use AI more intensely write more code and explore more new tools, pointing to large potential gains but also growing disparities.
