Gergő Tóth has been awarded by the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare with a FORTE Research Grant to be carried out at the Centre for Regional Science at Umea University (CERUM).
Gergő's project investigates the critical role of skills in shaping labour market mobility and regional resilience to economic shocks. By addressing why some labour market groups secure jobs misaligned with their skills due to structural constraints, the research examines how skill combinations impact job market stability and adaptability. Leveraging Sweden’s unparalleled administrative registers and Arbetsförmedlingen’s JobTech database, the project utilizes advanced machine learning and network science techniques to disentangle structural constraints from true skill-driven labour market dynamics. The project aims to develop skill-relatedness networks and identify resilient sectors capable of weathering external disruptions like digitalization and the green transition. Over three years, this research will produce innovative analyses and insights that inform strategies for fostering employment stability, enhancing regional adaptability, and guiding policymaking for robust labour markets. By bridging gaps in understanding labour mobility and economic resilience, the project strives to address global challenges in workforce adaptability with actionable solutions.
