Balázs Lengyel commented on the Nature Careers summary that features recent findings about how the EU Funding ban to Hungarian universities impact early career researchers.
In 2022 the Council of the European Union suspended research funding for Hungarian universities run by newly established public interest trusts claiming the erosion of transparency and academic freedom. A survey run by the Hungarian Young Academy, in collaboration with Balázs, among the 31-45-year-old cohort of Hungarian academics reveals a troubling landscape as a consequence of the ban. Particularly alarming is the high fraction of impacted early career researchers, not just from institutions directly affected by the suspension (46.4%) but, strikingly, from those still eligible for funding (35.1%).
